Puma’s Sonic the Hedgehog sneaker coming to South AfricaBy Staff Writer 28 May 2018 | Categories: news
We’ve talked about Sonic the Hedgehog getting his own pair of sneakers, and now the local release date and price has been announced. Unfortunately, you would have to collect a number of little golden rings before you can slip a pair of these on your feet - the Puma x SEGA RS-0 Sonic shoe will retail for R2 999 when it comes to South Africa at the end of June 2018.
They will be released alongside the Puma x Sega RS-0 Dr. Eggman, which to us looks more like Sonic’s original shoes in the game, but is credited to be inspired by his archnemesis.
Firstly, more about the RS-0 Sonic, which take their cues from Sonic the Hedgehog and the areas he protects, including the iconic Green Hill Zone (16-bit grass print on the heel). The upper is made from a textured suede reminiscent of Sonic’s trademark blue fur, while the striking red outsole stands for his shoes, according to Puma. Take a closer look and you’ll see more familiar colour hints from the game – from classic gold rings, to the lush green grass that he speeds on.
The upper also features micro ventilation perforations, embroidered Puma Formstrip, deboss of Sonic’s head and gold rings. Metallic gold rings once again appear on the lace ends, relating to the classic gold rings collected in the video game. The story continues on the mid and insole with checkered print nostalgic to the retro video game. The outsole features translucent red rubber and a Sonic logo under print. Finally, the tongue label features the collaboration logo and RS-0 binary number branding.
The Puma x Sega RS-0 Dr. Eggman has an all-over red upper and footbed. The upper is decked in a pebbled patent leather with micro ventilation perforations, a debossed Puma Formstrip and a debossed Dr. Eggman head that shoots fireballs from his Eggmobile. Puma notes his conniving face and fireballs are debossed on the medial heel, while gold rings have been inserted on the laces. The footbed features black and yellow caution stripes – a nod to the graphics on Eggman’s Eggmobile.
Metallic outsole and caution stripes take design cues from his scientific machinery. The outsole features translucent blue rubber and Sonic logo under print, the exact colour referenced from Dr. Eggman’s glasses. The tongue label features the collaboration logo and RS-0 binary number branding. Both sneakers are packaged in a special box that is inspired by the iconic Green Hill Zone.
The Puma x Sega RS-0 Sonic and Dr. Eggman sneakers will be available in late June at Puma Select stores and Shelflife for R2 999 each.
