For the past two years, Android smartwatch makers had very little to choose from when it came to the processor powering their wearables, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 being the go-to option. First debuted in February 2016, the chipset is getting a little stale, which has prompted the company to confirm that it will be working on new silicon for the latest Wear OS-sporting smartwatches.

The announcement comes via Wareable, which recently chatted to Qualcomm's senior wearables director, Pankaj Kedia. The reveal of the new chipsets is expected to happen in Q3 this year, according to Kedia, with several partners said to be lining up new devices touting the processors in time for the festive season.

Kedia did not get into the specifics about how this upcoming processor will be an improvement on its predecessor, but did highlight the importance of smartwatch features like always-on displays, along with having hardware to support all the new functions that Wear OS will bring to the fore.

Whether or not new processors will be enough to revive a relatively stagnant Android smartwatch market, remains to be seen.
