RED to partner with Lucid to create 8K 3D camera for Hydrogen One
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 23 May 2018 | Categories: newsPre-orders are currently open for RED's new Hydrogen One smartphone, starting at $1295 for the aluminium version. Billed as a premium mobile device that places an emphasis on camera and video, RED is looking to partner with Lucid on the creation of a 8K 3D camera system for the Hydrogen One.
This prosumer offering is still under development, so it's still unclear how it will work exactly, but the general idea will be to fuse the images from two 4K cameras in order to create an 8K video. Once the 8K image or video is being filmed, it could then be ported to the Hydrogen One's holographic 3D display.
Whether or not such an expensive offering will prove alluring to professional photographers remains to be seen, especially as the highly touted display of the Hydrogen One is yet to be seen in person, with RED reluctant to have pictures taken of it as the images would not do justice to the 3D holographic tech.
No price has been mention for the 8K Lucid system just yet, but the Hydrogen One is set to be available within the next two months in select regions.
