Apple's Siri-touting smart speaker, the HomePod, went on sale Stateside recently for $349. Until now, the cost to repair the device was unknown, but MacRumors has unearthed the price should an owner not have AppleCare which costs $39.

According to the website's sources, repairs for an out-of-warranty HomePod costing up to $279, which with the added shipping of $20 that Engadget points out, puts the price to fix your home speaker at roughly $300. For that amount, you're pretty much buying a new HomePod speaker, which means that this is one of the rare occasions that purchasing AppleCare alongside your device makes sense.

That said, it's unclear if there are any additional costs required when making a repair. iCare warranty on iPhones in South Africa for example covers the smartphone for a screen replacement if it gets damaged, but there is often a fee attached to servicing the device. As such, when the HomePod finally lands locally, it will be necessary to read the fine print on the warranty before purchasing.
