The microSD card has been around for awhile now, with a technological successor yet to be produced. Samsung, however, might have the answer with the world's first ever removable Universal Flash Storage (UFS) memory cards. 

Available in four different sizes (32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB), the memory cards work on the UFS JEDEC 1.0 card extension standard. This means that they're specifically designed for use in high-end mobile shooting devices, according to Samsung, including DSLRs, 3D VR cameras, action cameras and drones. That said, there are currently no devices that support UFS in removable format.  

The South Korean manufacturer believes this latest offering could be a gamechanger, noting that it will provide greatly improved viewing experiences. “Our new 256 GB UFS card will provide an ideal user experience for digitally-minded consumers and lead the industry in establishing the most competitive memory card solution,” adds Jung-bae Lee, senior vice president, Memory Product Planning & Application Engineering at Samsung. 

To that end, Samsung reports that the UFS card delivers five times faster sequential read performance than its microSD counterpart, registering at 530 Mbps. This, the company says, could allow a user to read a 5 GB Full HD movie in approximately 10 seconds. 

The official release date and pricing for these new memory cards has not been detailed, but Samsung expects to unveil them at US retailers in coming months.
