Snowden biopic by Oliver Stone adds Nicolas Cage to cast
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 25 February 2015 | Categories: newsFollowing his widely publicised leak in 2013, Edward Snowden has gained an almost celebrity status. It's no surprise then that his life is being brought to Hollywood, as Oliver Stone is set to bring the yet-to-be-titled Snowden biopic to theatres come 25 December this year.
We're quite intrigued by this film, as one of our favourite young actors Joseph-Gordon Levitt (50/50, Don Jon) will play the lead role of Edward Snowden. The rest of the cast is equally promising, with Shailene Woodley (The Descendants, Divergent) and Zachary Quinto (Star Trek: Into Darkness, Margin Call).
Now joining the cast is the irrepressible Nicolas Cage, whose acting exploits are too long to name. His more recent works like Drive Angry for example, have not inspired much confidence for the once great actor. Hopefully this new Snowden biopic will resurrect his career somewhat, as Cage will play a US intelligence officer.
The script for Stone's take on Snowden's life will draw inspiration from two books, Time of the Octopus (written by Snowden's lawyer Anatoly Kucherena) and The Snowden Files by Luke Harding. It seems like Snowden's tale is an enthralling one, with the documentary Citizenfour winning recently at the 2015 Oscars for best documentary. It will prove interesting to see how Stone's visceral filming style will translate.
