It appears as if Sony is having a rethink as far as its mobile strategy is concerned. According to Xperia Blog, the Japanese company confirmed at its Investor Day that it will soon be focusing solely on its flagship and mid-range devices, opting to forego any significant efforts in the premium mid-range space. 

If true, it would mean that follow ups to phones like the Xperia X and Xperia X Compact will be scrapped, with more mid-range and flagship devices on the way. That seemed to be the case at MWC 17 earlier this year, with Sony debuting the 4K HDR display touting XZ Premium, as well as the mid-range Xperia XA1 and XA1 Ultra. 

The former device is expected to land early-July, and is positioned as a statement of intent by the Japanese company, with a host of other Android flagships already in the country. Whether this change in approach has the desired effect of growing the Sony Mobile brand in regions like Europe and Africa, remains to be seen. 

As such, it should be interesting to see what kind of phone Sony unveils at IFA 2017 in September, if any phone at all.
