This past Easter weekend, the first teaser trailer for The Last Jedi surfaced online, and to date has garnered over 27 million views on YouTube. It's done so for good reason too, as the two-minute long trailer gives us plenty to dissect. As such, we've gone through each frame to uncover five possible tidbits about the next Star Wars film, which is set to land in cinemas during December this year.

Be warned - SPOILERS AHEAD!

1. Grey Jedi?

Following the release of the teaser trailer, there's been quite a bit of chatter about Grey Jedi. While they're not strict canon as far as the movies go, they've been mentioned several times in games, novels and comics books. For those unfamiliar with the concept, Grey Jedi distance themselves from the zealot-like teachings of High Council, instead opting for a life that treads the line between the Light and Dark sides of the Force.

This is hinted at during the opening half of the trailer, as Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) instructs Rey (Daisy Ridley) to breathe and focus in on what she feels. She replies by mentioning light, then dark and finally a balance. Could Skywalker be opting the thinking of a Grey Jedi following his failed Jedi academy, and now be instructing Rey in the same manner?

For an interesting new chapter in the Jedi saga, we hope so.

2. Ditching the mask

If you've watched The Force Awakens, you're aware that Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) gets a beating from Rey in the final battle of the film, scarring his face in the process. Based on the image of his crushed, still smoking, mask in the teaser trailer, we reckon Kylo Ren will be going sans mask for the new film.

We also see him holding his signature red lightsabre with cross guard near the end of the trailer, also opting to forego a mask. The change is not dramatic, but we personally feel that wearing a mask, as opposed to not doing so, would be a better homage to his grandfather - Darth Vader.

3. New Order strikes back

After the Star Killer base was destroyed in The Force Awakens, the New Order was sent home to lick their wounds. If we've learned anything from previous Star Wars films though, the bad guys always come back with avengeance.

In the teaser trailer, we see the return of Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) and her squad of elite Stormtroopers, while a base housing Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and some of the rebel fighters come under attack. There's also a space dogfight sequence towards the end of the trailer to support the idea that the New Order does indeed strike back in the Last Jedi.

4. More flashbacks

As far as how Luke Skywalker ended up as a Jedi hermit on a lone planet, we're betting a couple of flashbacks will take care of this. At the 1:30 mark we see Skywalker kneeling next to R2-D2 as a large building burns in the background.

This imagery could harken back to the Force dream sequence Rey has in the previous Star Wars flick when she first touches Skywalker's lightsabre, and we see his bionic hand atop R2-D2. In the next movie we might also get a clearer understanding of how the Knights of Ren came to be too.

5. Finn piloting the Falcon

Who's piloting the Millennium Falcon, certainly the most iconic spacecraft in the Star Wars universe? We saw Chewbacca pulling pilot duties after Hans Solo (Harrison Ford) was killed by his wayward son, but Chewy has always been more of a wingman than leader in the series.

How about New Order denouncer Finn (John Boyega)? He's glimpsed in a stasis pod of some kind during the trailer, but having him there for the film's entirety would seem a bit of a waste. With Poe leading the X-Wing fighters and Rey doing her training, someone's going to have to take over Hans Solo's spaceship, and our money is on Finn.

Now that you're a bit more informed, give the first teaser for The Last Jedi another watch. We've done so 20 times already.
