The New Mutants takes on superhero horror
By Staff Writer 9 January 2020 | Categories: newsTo many, X-Men: Dark Phoenix left a bad taste in the mouth and was not the fitting farewell we expected before Professor Xavier and friends depart for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, there is a final mutant hurrah coming from 20th Century Fox – The New Mutants.
A second trailer reveals that it’s not the regular X-Men vibe we should be expecting. Instead, this movie leans more towards horror, with five mutant teenagers trapped in a seemingly benevolent institution. Our inmates, Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams, Game of Thrones), Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy, The Witch), Cannonball (Charlie Heaton, Stranger Things), Mirage (Blu Hunt, The Originals) and Sunspot (Henry Zaga, 13 Reasons Why) soon find out that there are far more sinister forces at work behind the scenes.
Josh Boone sits in the director’s chair, perhaps best known for helming The Fault in Our Stars, while also now tied to a remake of Stephen King’s The Stand miniseries.
Can his horror-take on the superhero genre work? We hope so, but judging by the overall reception of Brightburn, a movie we quite enjoyed, The New Mutants might have its work cut out for it. We’re also quite concerned that the first trailer for the movie dropped two years ago, with reshoots apparently taking place for a more horror feel.
