Remember platformer Banjo-Kazooie? Well, Playtonic Games certainly does, as the team turned to Kickstarter to fund its spiritual successor, called Yooka-Laylee. Within an hour, the game didn’t just reach its £175 000 goal, it smashed it, and quickly went on to rack up almost ten times that amount.

At the current time of writing, Playtonic has raised £1 447 323 from a very healthy 44 000 plus backers. As if that wasn’t enough, the game has also earned itself the distinction of being the fastest backed Kickstarter game to date.

What’s interesting is that Yooka-Laylee, which pairs a chameleon with a bat to navigate through a colourful world, is not a first person shooter, nor is it any genre that has become popular these days. Instead, it’s one that many studios seem to have given up on – buddy-duo 3D platforming games – which had their heyday a good ten years ago. The game is currently set to come out on Windows, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U by October 2016.
