International VoIP provider Skype has confirmed that it will be offering subscribers in qualifying countries free calls during the FIFA Football World Cup as part of a promotional campaign.

 
According to the Skype Football promotion website South African users will have access to the following benefits during the tournament:
 
1)      One month free subscription to the Skype service.
2)      120 minutes of free calls to landline numbers in South Africa for a month.
3)      Unlimited free calls to landline numbers in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom for a month.
4)      Unlimited free calls to landlines and mobiles in the USA for a month.
 
According to the company the offer is limited to 100 000 subscriptions internationally and will terminate on the 11th of July, after which subscription payments will continue to be charged automatically unless users cancel their accounts.
 
In addition to this, a fair usage policy is applicable for all calls made using the Skype service.
 
Skype’s fair usage policy website explains that “calls to phones and mobiles and Skype To Go calls are included in your subscription subject to a fair usage limit of 10,000 minutes per user per month, with a maximum of 6 hours per day. Also, no more than 50 different numbers in total can be called per day.”
