News: Google releases latest Android usage data

A lot of Google Android users love frozen yoghurt, as the latest usage indicators for the Android mobile operating system (OS) illustrates. Android 2.2 (aka Froyo) has grown its usage rate by almost 10%, since the company last revealed the user figures.

During January Google announced that Froyo, released in May 2010, accounted for the biggest slice of the Android user pie. At that stage the mobile OS was utilised by over half of all Android users (51.8%) on devices such as LG’s Optimus One.

Now Android 2.2 is running on 61.3% of all Android devices (smartphones and tablet PCs). Coming in second is Android 2.1 (Éclair, employed on the Motorola Flipout) with 29% of devices operating on it, meaning that over 90% of all devices are powered by a modern iteration of the OS.

Cupcake (Android 1.5) and Donut (Android 1.6), however, is still utilised by 3% and 4.8% of Android-running devices (down from 4.7% and 7.9%).

The latest versions Android 2.3, called Gingerbread, was introduced on Google’s own Nexus S (made by Samsung) and occupies a 0.7% marketshare, with the latest update, Android 2.3.3, doing the operating on 1% of Google-powered devices. Honeycomb (Android 3.0) that powers tablets, the likes of Motorola’s Xoom and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1, only operate on 0.2% of Android devices thus far.
