According to Kaspersky Labs’ January 2011 Spam Report, it’s been business as usual for the world’s spammers after global spam circulation dropped over the holidays.

According to its statistics, pharmaceutical spam was the most popular category this month, reclaiming the top spot after declining somewhat after a number of anti-spam campaigns was launched last year.

In second place was the Personal Finance category, offering cheap loans and employment via bogus recruitment agencies. The Fake Designer Goods category came in third, falling from its number one spot over the holiday season.

The most popular sources of spam according to countries remained India, with a 9% stake, Russia, with 8.2% and Italy, seeing 5% of worldwide spam.

The report also stated that the amount of spam found in email traffic increased by 0.5% compared to last month’s numbers, while malicious files were found in 2.75% of all emails.

While spammers saw their capacities reduced during December with a number of anti-spam and anti-botnet campaigns, it seems they’re back in action, with Kaspersky warning that the volume of spam could again reach summer 2010 levels during the next few months.
