Not content with its dominance in the landline and internet connectivity scenes, Telkom will now make its move into the mobile industry.
 
After selling their shares in Vodacom last year, Telkom has now buddied up with MTN, announcing yesterday that they have signed a national roaming agreement that will result in Telkom entering the mobile voice and data market in South Africa. The deal means that Telkom will be able to launch its mobile service later this year by offering its customers seamless access to MTN's SA network, while at the same time continuing to ready its own mobile base stations.
 
“I am delighted to make known the conclusion of a roaming agreement with MTN that will enhance Telkom’s ability to effectively compete in the mobile marketplace, said Telkom Group CEO Reuben September. “I regard this agreement as a breakthrough indicator of Telkom’s ability to successfully implement its strategy. Telkom is mindful that it needs to clearly illustrate delivery on its objectives; and ensure that its efforts to enhance shareholder value are brought to fruition.”
