Google has a bit of sweet tooth when it comes to naming its mobile operating systems. The latest one from the company was revealed last night, using the solar eclipse as inspiration to make the announcement in a cute little video. The result is that Android 8.0, previous referred to as Android O, is now Android Oreo.

We called it back in March, when developers starting getting their hands on the mobile OS. Given the company’s proclivity for sweets and baked goods as source material for names, as well as its history with OS’ like Android KitKat, going for Oreo seemed the obvious choice.

Android Oreo is currently available via the Google Open Source Project, with the Pixel and Pixel XL phones likely to be the first phones to receive it. As for when new devices will be sporting the OS, it will probably be native on the Google Pixel 2 (still to be announced) or perhaps the slew of new devices arriving at MWC 18 next year.
