We always knew Black Panther had the potential to be special. Armed with a stellar cast, Afrofuturistic visuals and a promising director (Ryan Coogler, Creed) behind the helm, the movie has since surpassed all the milestones that Marvel Studios had laid out for it. The most recent achievement, according to Disney, saw Black Panther surpass the $1 billion mark in ticket sales worldwide.
It has also beat out other popular Disney properties, with Box Office Mojo noting that Black Panther topped the first four-day earnings (opening weekend) for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Other regions around the globe, such as China, have enjoyed the film too, with it grossing $66.5 million during the first three days.
As such, it shows that superhero movies can have a non-white protagonist, and still prove successful. It also serves as evidence for producers that with the right mix of cast, script and director, any superhero story can be done well.
Hopefully then, Black Panther can be a blueprint for future Marvel projects, not only for its box office takings, but also for how it tells a particular narrative. If you haven't seen Black Panther yet, we strongly urge that you do so.
