The significant position that Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining holds in the horror movie genre is right up there with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby. Written by horror’s main man, Stephen King, it is just as much hated by King as adored by the movie’s fans.

What King will think about the upcoming Doctor Sleep movie should be interesting then, especially since his 2013 book is the follow-up to The Shining. Remember little Danny Torrance that rode his tricycle around the Overlook Hotel and trying not to get killed? Poor Danny never got to grips with the events, and as a grown-up Dan (Ewan McGregor) he struggles with alcoholism and a demonic graffiti problem. Dan meets a girl (Kyliegh Curran) who seems to have a bit more control over her shining abilities, and together they need to contend with The True Knot, a gang living off kids who poses the shining.

If you are into horrors, the trailer for Doctor Sleep offers more than a bit of fan service, with a lot of the scenes taking us back to those surreal moments in the Overlook Hotel. Surprisingly, these are actually not clips taken from the 1980 movie, but rather ones painfully recreated by director Mike Flanagan. Flanagan is of course stooped in the horror genre, having cut his teeth on movies such as Before I Wake and Oculus, not to forget the highly-praises The Haunting of Hill House series.

Doctor Sleep looks like a must-watch for fans not only of Stephen King but also of The Shining. It is out Stateside on 8 November 2019.
