As promised Blizzard released a full trailer for the upcoming World of Warcraft movie at their recent BlizzCon event.  It leaves the recent teaser in the dust and certainly fleshes out the plot, confirming that it tells the tale out of the viewpoint of two characters, each in different factions.

On the one hand you have Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel, Vikings) leader of the Alliance, out to protect human turf against the Orcs. The Orcs are fleeing their dying land Draenor, looking for a new terrain to call home. The main character on the Orc side is Durotan (Toby Kebbell, Fantastic Four) who appears to realise that war with humans will be bad news for both parties.

For now it seems like opinion is divided on what Warcraft might actually offer. Writing in Forbes, Dave Thier notes, “It has a lot of people very excited, but alas, I’m not one of them. I had high hopes that this one might actually work, but this trailer fills me with dread.”

Over at PC Gamer, Leif Johnson is a bit more optimistic, analysing the trailer on various aspects. He notes, “Much of the trailer shows that pairing CGI characters with real ones remains an iffy prospect, but after repeated viewings, I find that my inner Warcraft nerd is still thumping my inner cynic into silence.”

We tend also to go with the thumbs-up: the CGI looks smart, Azeroth translates well to the big screen and it’s great to see familiar landscapes come to life. Finally, the story looks strong enough to keep non World of Warcraft fans locked in for at least two hours – heck, if The Hobbit’s seven hours can do it, the fantasy on offer in Warcraft certainly can do too.

The movie is directed by David Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones, who was also responsible for Moon and Source Code. It’s set for opening on the 10th of June 2016. For non-World of Warcraft fans, head over to io9 for a quick introduction to what’s happening in the trailer.
