Hot New Trailers - 21 May 2015
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 21 May 2015 | Categories: newsPixels (Second Trailer)
July 2015 (United States)
While the premise of Pixels is not the most compelling one we've heard of for a movie in recent years, it does look like some good old fashioned family fun. It stars funnyman Adam Sandler (Don't Mess with the Zohan, Spanglish) and his usual buddy film teammate Kevin James (Here Comes the Boom, Grown Ups). Along with the 80s gaming nostalgia, we're also quite keen to check out GoT's Peter Dinklage, sporting a suitably epic mullet that would even make Billy Ray Cyrus jealous. With the cinema release a couple of months away, a second trailer has debuted which looks a lot like the first, as aliens in the guise of gaming characters aim to destroy earth one pixel at a time.
Best Bit: The awesomeness that is Dinklage at 1:00.
Pan
October 2015 (United States)
A reimagining of J.M Barrie's tale of lost youth, there are is no fairy dust or ill-fitting green tights here. Instead Pan tells the story of a young orphaned boy named Peter, and his journey to Neverland. The main antagonist is also different, with Blackbeard (played by Hugh Jackman) replacing Capt. Hook. Rather Hook (Garrett Hedlund from Tron: Legacy) is Peter's ally, as the pair look for freedom and a life of their own. As evidenced by the trailer below, Pan looks filled to the brim with spectacular special effects, amazingly detailed costumes and otherworldly settings, all of which is sure to make a great fantasy epic when it debuts later this year.
Best Bit: Pirate ships battling mid-air at 1:30.
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials
September 2015 (United States)
In the aftermath of popular young adult books turned movies, such as The Hunger Games and Divergent, some avid moviegoers may have missed 2014's Maze Runner. Based on the series by James Dashner, it was book to screen adaptation as good as its female-led counterparts. Now the second installment, The Scorch Trials sees Thomas and the other Gladers take on the perils of the post-apocalyptic outside world and the ominously ever-present WCKD organisation. Just like the first film, there's plenty of young acting talent on display, with Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario and Thomas Brodie-Sangster all reprising their original roles.
Best Bit: When Thomas fights back at 1:10.
Amy
July 2015 (United Kingdom)
It's strange to think that the immensely talented, but ultimately flawed, British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse passed away four years ago. This new documentary tells Amy's tragic story with behind the scenes footage and never before seen interviews with the six-time Grammy Award winner. Having received rave reviews at this year's Cannes film festival, this 90-minute documentary is expected to evoke strong reactions from Winehouse's fans. While we'll our reserve judgement until the documentary becomes locally available, it seems like Amy will focus largely with Winehouse's inability to cope with the pressure and intense media attention that came with fame.
Best Bit: Winehouse's enlightening revelations at 0:44.
We Are Your Friends
August 2015 (United States)
With EDM at its core, We Are Your Friends is a highly stylised telling of the modern day college experience. The film sees Zac Efron play an aspiring DJ with big plans and not enough money to make them come true. He then runs into Emily Ratajkowski (the Blurred Lines girl), as he gets swept up in a world he really knows nothing about. The intro for the trailer below has a Trainspotting kinda vibe about it, with Efron's character (Cole) intensely aware of the world around him, but ultimately unable to come to grips with it. While this film may not appeal to all, it's a great little snapshot into the current millennial mindset, not to mention a pretty good soundtrack.
Best Bit: As Cole breaks down the fundamentals of DJing at 1:10.
The Intern
October 2015 (United States)
The latest work from writer-director Nancy Meyers (It's Complicated, Something's Gotta Give), The Intern sees a 70-year old Robert De Niro head back into the job market. Like many young people starting out, he becomes an intern, with Anne Hathaway playing his boss. A light-hearted film, The Intern tries to dispel misconceptions about age, both young and old, and tries to deliver the message that wisdom comes from experience. Although we haven't seen the film yet, the trailer leads us to believe that Hathaway and De Niro form a good friendship and ultimately learn a thing or two about one another.
Best Bit: When De Niro enjoys his massage a little too much at 1:00.
7 Minutes
June 2015 (United States)
Explaining 7 Minutes is pretty simple. Three former High School friends with dead end jobs and bills to pay try their hand at robbing banks. After a straightforward drug drop-off goes horribly awry, and forces the men to try any means possible of covering their debt, they are all pushed to their emotional and moral breaking points. The cast is a bunch of relative unknowns, in the form of Luke Mitchell, Jason Ritter and Zane Holtz playing the leads, and screen veteran Kris Kristofferson (Blade, Joyful Noise) added to the mix. The trailer looks fraught with tension and is chock a block with action. Perhaps a sleeper hit in the making, 7 Minutes lands in cinemas Stateside next month.
Best Bit: When Sam loses his anonymity at 0:18.
