Masterminds

Masterminds mixes the talents of some of our favourite comedians and is based on the Loomis Fargo Bank Robbery in which $17.3 million was stolen. Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson and Kristen Wiig all lend their comedy chops, following the hapless David (Galifianakis) as he somehow pulls off one of America’s biggest bank robberies to date. With Jared Hess at the helm (Nacho Libre, Napoleon Dynamite), we’re quite sure that Masterminds will hit the mark.

Best Bit: The Beastie Boys’ Sabotage playing in the background makes this trailer.

Avengers: Age of Ultron
24 April 2015 (South Africa)

The Age of Ultron's local cinema debut draws ever closer, and for some comic book fans (including us), 24 April cannot come any quicker. As a small respite, Marvel has released the final trailer for the second Avengers flick, and all the main players are in action (except for the teased Vision of course). We personally can't wait to see the Hulk and Iron-Man tear up the Joburg CBD, but there is also plenty of other goodies to enjoy, as the Avengers take on hordes of Ultron's robotic minions. Just like the first Avengers movie, SA will enjoy the action before anyone else, as its official global release is 1 May.  

Best Bit: 1:05 as Cap and Ultron go toe-to-toe.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

Sometimes when watching a trailer, despite the laughs to be had along the way, there’s that unmistakable feeling that the movie is going to leave you crying into your popcorn. We suspect Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is one such flick. It walked away with the Grand Jury Prize plus the Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, telling the story of amateur movie maker, Gregg Gaines (Thomas Mann, Project X) who befriends a girl in his school dying of leukaemia, Rachel (Olivia Cooke, Bates Motel). Go watch with a box of hankies.

Best Bit: This is not a touching, romantic story at 0:55.

Burying the Ex

Ever been in a relationship that, despite it ending, it never seems to be officially over? Well at least you’ve never dated a zombie. This is the dilemma that poor Max (Anton Yelchin, Star Trek) is facing when his demanding ex-girlfriend (Ashley Greene, Twilight) rises from the grave. We suppose that must be a warning against drunk texting your ex after a particularly rough night out.

Best Bit: Some embalming fluid comes back up at 1:40.

Amy

When Amy Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning in 2011, many people felt that her life played out to its inevitable conclusion. Amy, the new documentary by Asif Kapadia (responsible for the quite excellent Senna), explores the rise and disastrous fall of certainly one of Britain’s biggest recent talents. For fans of her amazing voice, this documentary seems like a must-see.

Best Bit: 0:55 when Amy eerily predicts what would happen if she becomes famous.

Insidious: Chapter 3
June 2015 (United States)

If you're still feeling groggy from the Easter weekend, this new trailer for Insidious: Chapter 3 will certainly wake you up. Without giving too much away, this latest trailer shows how an attempt to "Reach out to the Dead" goes horribly awry. As the mini séance continues, tension in the darkened room builds as something evil and sinister seems just around the corner. For those brave enough to check out Insidious: Chapter 3 in cinemas, it should reach our shores in June, but don't say we didn't warn you.

Best Bit: Couldn't tell as our eyes were closed.

Survivor
No release date yet

Although we haven’t quite forgiven Pierce Brosnan for that final Bond, he is making amends with some strong recent roles. Whether Survivor will be one of them remains to be seen, but he does look cool as an assassin who struggles to kill a State Department employee (Milla Jovovich) in this action thriller. James McTeigue, who directed V for Vendetta, is at the helm, while Dylan McDermott (Olympus has Fallen) also stars.

Best Bit: The bomb explosion at the start.

Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman
May 2015 (United States)

Hollywood icon, Paul Newman (The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke) had one other passion in his life besides film - racing. This new documentary by comedian Adam Carolla looks at Newman’s life on the racetrack which started at age 48. Many sceptics questioned his desire to enter the dangerous world of racing, but this documentary sheds light on Newman's intense love for the sport, along with commentary from his fellow actors.

Best Bit: 0:27 when Newman waxes lyrical for his love of racing.
