New Gorilla Glass 5 screens can survive a five foot drop
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 21 July 2016 | Categories: newsIf you own a modern smartphone, hopefully it’s touting a screen made by Corning up front. More specifically, the company's Gorilla Glass offerings, which protects an estimated 4.5 billion mobile devices across the planet. Now the screen maker has unveiled its latest iteration - Gorilla Glass 5.
What makes this new offering special, is the improved protection from drops. Corning's independent lab tests state Gorilla Glass 5 can withstand a 1.6 metre (5.4 feet) fall on its face 80% of the time.
While a 20% failure rate is still relatively high, Corning told TechCrunch that its new screen is roughly 1.8 times more durable than its predecessor. In terms of scratch resistance, Gorilla Glass 5 performs on par with the previous iteration.
This new glass displays will be distributed to manufacturers in Q3 this year. Watch the new Gorilla Glass 5 screen get torture tested in the video below.
