Over the past few days, the gaming world has been abuzz with rumours about Nintendo's next console, codenamed NX for the moment. The most recent one, tipped Android to be the console's native OS, but now a statement from a Nintendo spokesperson confirms quite the contrary. The confirmation comes courtesy of the Wall Street Journal, with the spokesperson stating that “there is no truth to the report saying that we are planning to adopt Android for NX."

The rumours of Nintendo tapping Google's open-source OS to run its next console were initially stoked by Japanese Business Daily Nikkei, which cited Android as a easier way to showcase the NX console to a greater pool of developers. The Next Web added credence to this claim, given Nintendo's recent announcement of their entry into the mobile gaming arena. According to TNW, using Android as a native OS would allow Nintendo to ship more gaming content to a larger variety of devices more effectively.

Although we have not heard any word from Nintendo CEO, Satoru Iwata on this issue, perhaps this recent denial is simply a delaying tactic for when Nintendo opts to officially confirm more details about the NX at a large event. Oh wait… when is E3 happening again?
