Rugby 18 coming this Friday, but no Super Rugby
By Staff Writer 25 October 2017 | Categories: newsIt’s a bit unfortunate that rugby as video game does not draw the same type of attention as say FIFA or Madden, with games simply not receiving the type of developer budget as for the big titles. That said, Rugby 18 by French developers Bigben Interactive is getting a release this Friday and from what’s on offer from the gameplay trailer, it looks pretty good.
Seeing that it’s a European developer, the game is slanted more towards northern hemisphere tournaments, with the TOP 14, PRO D2, PRO14, and Aviva Premiership Rugby champs covered. No Super Rugby unfortunately, although since they are partaking in the PRO14, the Southern Kings and Toyota Cheetahs are onboard.
Bigben notes that there are 65 official teams and more than 2 000 professional players from around the globe on offer, and the Springboks, Aussies and Kiwis are officially licenced.
There are two main modes in the game. In Career mode you get to control a team in a bottom league and try and work your way up, either picking players and simulating the match, or actually playing. As you move up the budget gets bigger and you can purchase better players. If that’s not your bag, there’s also My Squad mode where you can pick the best players available, although they cost squad points. These you earn the more games you play, with online games also available.
Seeing that this was a Lions Tour year, those who pre-order Rugby 18 at participating retailers will receive the 2017 British & Irish Lions team as an in-game exclusive.
Rugby 18 will be available from Friday for PC, PS4 or Xbox One. Check the trailer below for all the scrumming, side-stepping, spear-tackling action.
