Last month we covered a story that saw Justice Smith (The Get Down) cast in the live-action Pokémon film, Detective Pikachu. At the time it was unclear what role Smith would play, but as it turns out, he won't be the titular character. That honour is instead going to Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds, and may prove to be very odd or a stroke of genius.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds will be wearing a motion capture suit in order to play the much beloved Pokémon, with Smith portraying a young man searching for his missing father. It's still unclear at this stage if Reynold's voice will form part of the performance, but the prospect of a Pikachu that fires off quips like Deadpool could be an interesting one.

Shooting for the film is set to begin in the new year, but there's still no word on when Detective Pikachu will hit cinemas.
