Volkswagen's next Electric Vehicle will attempt to set world record
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 20 October 2017 | Categories: NewsLike several carmakers, Volkswagen is making the move to having more electric vehicles (EVs) in their lineup. Furthermore, the German manufacturer also plans to showcase the potential of EVs, with next year's Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in June serving as a prime event.
The Colorado-held race will see Volkswagen unveil a new sportscar, although VW is still acting hush-hush about the finer details, with only a silhouetted image (picture above) being released for now. Apart from its electric engine, the racecar will feature an all-wheel drive system designed to tackle the challenges of Pikes Peak.
It also happens to be the first time in 31 years that Volkswagen will compete in the hill climb. "It poses an enormous challenge and is therefore perfectly suited to proving the capabilities of upcoming technologies," noted Dr. Frank Welsch, VW board member responsible for development.
Along with showcasing what an EV can do, Dr. Welsch said that the data that VW gains from the experience will be used to develop technologies and integrate features within some of Volkswagen's future electric vehicles.
