HTC Flyer now available in SA
By Johan Keyter 23 May 2011 | Categories: newsHTC today announced that its first device to take on the lucrative tablet market, the HTC Flyer, has officially been released on South African shores, retailing for R6360.
The device is considerably more compact than other high-end tablet offerings such as Apple's iPad or the Samsung Galaxy, sporting a 7” display with a 1024 x 600 resolution. Its compact form does not denote performance though, as the tiny device packs a powerful 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor allowing for advanced multi-tasking.
The device also comes bundled wit HTC's Flyer Magic Pen, a stylus which works in conjunction with HTC's Scribe Technology to give users an alternative to fingertip control in certain applications. Using the pen users can take notes, draw pictures and even sign contracts in a natural and free flowing way.
The HTC Flyer features the company's all new HTC Sense user experience. The tablet itself runs the Android 2.2 OS, but HTC has included a number of extra features to make the OS more tablet friendly and increase usability.
A new 3D home screen is offered alongside unique widget and app organisation which puts your most important content first. Flash 10 and HTML 5 web browsing are also supported, so you can enjoy all your favourite websites in all their animated glory.
The HTC Flyer sports both 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity options and includes a full 32 GB of onboard storage space, with another 32 GB that can be added through microSD cards.
Also introduced is HTC Watch, a video download service which allows users to buy or rent more than 600 premium movies and TV series. Video can be enjoyed immediately through progressive download (working similarly to streaming), and will be stored in the cloud. From here up to five registered HTC devices can download and play the same videos, meaning you can easily share content with friends and family. HTC Watch is expected to go live in South Africa during the fourth quarter of 2011.
“We are delighted by the positive reactions that HTC Flyer has received since we first unveiled it in February and are pleased to be able to bring it to major markets across EMEA,” said Florian Seiche, president of HTC EMEA.
The HTC Flyer is available in South Africa starting this week and can be purchased at most major electronic retailers for a recommended retail price of R6360. Look forward to our review of the device which should go online soon.
