Nokia unveiled its first MeeGo-operating (MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan) smartphone, the Nokia N9 (promo video posted below), during a Nokia Connection event in Singapore in June. Now the Finnish phone maker has revealed that this smartphone will be making its way to South Africa.

“In the coming months, we expect that the major operators and retailers will have the svelte, swiping, multi-tasking masterpiece available locally,” the company posted to its official local NokiaRingaz blog.

Nokia didn’t provide a more specific release date for the N9, nor pricing. This pocket-friendly (116.45 x 61.2 x 7.6-12.1 mm, 135 g) mobile boasts a very attractive unibody design, with the most prominent element of its look being the 3.9" curved glass AMOLED (480 x 854 pixels) touch-enabled display.

It also sports near field communication (NFC) functionality and an 8 MP auto-focus camera with Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash and super wide 28 mm lens. This camera enables users to record HD-ready (720p) video and capture true 16:9 high-resolution photos.

Nokia’s N9 will be available in three colours, black, cyan and magenta, as well as in two variants sporting either 16 GB or 64 GB of storage space. This smartphone boasts 1 GB of RAM (4x that of the Nokia E7) and is powered by an ARM Cortex-A8 OMAP3630 processor running at 1 GHz, whilst a PowerVR SGX530 chip handles the graphics.

In related news Nokia also recently unveiled its latest smartphone, the Nokia 500. Although the company is releasing new mobile devices running on Symbian and MeeGo, its partnership with Microsoft means that going forward, Windows Phone 7 OS will be Nokia’s smartphone OS of choice.
