Facebook planning to rollout code to counteract Adblock Plus
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 12 August 2016 | Categories: newsAdverts. Say what you will about them, but for a lot of websites and social media platforms, it helps keep the lights on. Still, the popularity of ad blocking software is more popular than ever. To that end, Adblock Plus recently rolled out a workaround for blocking any unwanted (supposedly unblockable) advertising from Facebook in particular. As expected, the social media platform did not take to kindly to it.
Facebook informed TechCrunch that Adblock Plus removes not only ads, but also posts from the Friends and Pages section of a Facebook profile. “We’re disappointed that ad blocking companies are punishing people on Facebook as these new attempts don’t just block ads but also posts from friends and Pages. This isn’t a good experience for people and we plan to address the issue," expressed Facebook in an official statement.
The company's "plan" is to push an update to Facebook with an embedded code that nullifies the Adblock Plus workaround. Although unconfirmed, TechCrunch has been told by sources close to Facebook that an update will be rolled out over the next few days to address this issue.
The question now is, will Adblock Plus return the favour by distributing its own update to counteract Facebook's, et cetera, ad infinitum?
