Latest Windows 10 Insider Build features Eye Control
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 3 August 2017 | Categories: newsIf you're a Windows Insider Program member, you'll soon be able to test out the latest Build (15237) that the company is currently working on for its desktop operating system. The Build features a number of fixes, as well as new features, with Eye Tracking being the one getting the most attention at this stage.
The Eye Tracker has been introduced for those that are unable to use their hands to operate Windows 10, but will require the addition of a compatible eye tracker, such as the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C. Along with the eye tracking integration, the Windows 10 Build will also feature speech-to-text, in order to deliver a truly hands-free experience for users with physical disabilities.
Once Eye Tracking is enabled in the settings of the Build, users can look directly at the UI of Windows 10 to bring up a small window with some of the new tools available. To that end, users will have a virtual Eye Control mouse which can either right or left-hand click and facilitate selecting and deselecting of content on the screen. Added to this is a virtual keyboard for typing, which too uses eye tracking to select letters and words to help users craft emails, notes and documents. For users whose speech is not inhibited, an alternative option is the speech-to-text tool, which works in a similar way to Cortana.
At this stage it's unclear how much testing and refinement will be required before this new set of tools rolls out to the fully fledged version of Windows 10, but it's nice to see Microsoft make an effort to help physically disabled users get the most out of their operating system.
